The starter clutch is a one way or overrunning clutch between the large starter gear and the crankshaft. You have to pull the flywheel to change it, not too tough if you have or can borrow a flywheel puller. The clutch is fairly expensive even used as most junkyards won't split the clutch from the large starter gear. Around 180 dollars used as I recall . many times if this clutch fails broken teeth on the large gear and or the idler gear result. the idler gear is around 45 dollars new be sure the decompression system is functioning as a malfunctioning decomp is the major cause of these starter gear woes.
